Curriculum Objectives
This graduate course unit explores representatives of the Alexandrian Patristic tradition from the second to the fifth century within their historical milieu, their connections with other strands of tradition, and their lasting significance for the history of theology and the Christian experience.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this unit students will be able to:
- appraise the historical, ecclesial and cultural contexts within which the representatives of the Alexandrian tradition flourished
- evaluate the ways in which the Alexandrians assimilated and transformed the earlier Christian tradition
- display a profound awareness of the theological, exegetical and spiritual legacy of the Alexandrians
- critically analyse the selected writings of the Alexandrians from the viewpoint of their theological, exegetical and spiritual significance
- critically assess the relevant scholarship
