Philosophy in Poland
Fr Antonios Kaldas, Lecturer in Philosophy at St Cyril’s, recently travelled to Poland where he presented several papers.
The first was: “Do Machines Pay Attention?” which was presented at the International Association of Computing and Philosophy Conference in Warsaw. Fr Antonios argued that while many have equated attention with conscious experience in human beings, the same cannot be automatically assumed of intelligent machines, and there are in fact reasons to doubt the assumption even in humans.
The second was: “The Hungriest Cognition in the World: Triangulating the Capacity Limitations of Attention, Consciousness, and Working Memory” at the 22nd Annual Conference of the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness in Krakow, Poland. It is the premier international interdisciplinary conference in consciousness studies, with over 400 attendees this year. Fr Antonios argued for a model of cognition on which what we experience is much richer than what we can attend to, based on the empirical evidence of the capacity limitations of attention, consciousness, and working memory.
Fr Antonios will be teaching Apologetics in 2019–so watch this space!
